Become a Firefighter

Steps to become a Firefighter

  1. The first step in becoming a Firefighter with the St. Lucie County Fire District is to complete a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician Program (EMT) and pass the National Registry Exam. These programs generally last 12 weeks and are offered locally at Indian River State College (IRSC) and Treasure Coast Medical Institute (TCMI).
  2. The second step is to complete a State Approved Fire Academy and pass the state test. Most institutions that offer the academy have full and part-time options. The full-time class is approximately 16 weeks while the part time class is approximately 30 weeks. The local Fire Academy is offered at IRSC.
  3. Once an individual is both certified as an EMT and Firefighter they are eligible to apply when positions become available. Applicants are strongly encouraged to begin a state-approved paramedic program, as many Fire Rescue organizations, including the Saint Lucie County Fire District, give preference to applicants who are enrolled or have completed a Paramedic program. Locally, IRSC and TCMI both offer Paramedic programs and these courses  typically last 40 weeks.

Applicants must be 18 years of age with a valid State of Florida driver’s license.

Applicants will be subject to drug testing and criminal background check.
