The public purpose of the special district is for fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, and other duties and responsibilities in St. Lucie County, as may be directed by the St. Lucie County Fire District Board of Commissioners.
The fiscal year of the special district runs from October 1st of a given year to the following September 30th.
The special district’s charter is included in Chapter 2004-407, Laws of Florida (2004), adopted by the Florida Legislature, which was filed in the Office of the Secretary of State on June 17, 2004. The Fire District's charter has been amended by Chapter 2016-250, Laws of Florida. The special district is also governed by the provisions of Chapter 189, Florida Statutes.
The boundaries of the special district are coterminous with the boundaries of St. Lucie County, Florida.
