In 2008, a new partnership between the St. Lucie County Fire District and Omniflight Helicopters, Inc. began. Under this new partnership, known as St. Lucie County Air Rescue, air transport of critical patients is provided with a skilled crew of three: a critical care nurse and pilot provided through Omniflight; and a flight-medic provided through the Fire District. Air Rescue, an Augusta A119 “Koala”, is considered one of the fastest air medical helicopters in the state, and capable of transporting critically ill and injured patients at speeds in excess of 170 miles per hour. In 2009, Air Rescue performed 371 transport flights. |
